Apocalypse Scenario #683: The Box

by Mira Grant

Publication Date—2011-04-18

Every week five friends get together to play a game– a game they call the Apocalypse Game. It’s a fun time with chips and beer and plotting the end of the world. Except this time, one of them is missing and the stakes are higher than ever before.

A new short story from Mira Grant, the author of Feed.

Word count: ~3,900

Excerpt

“Andy, where’s the beer?” “Look in the crisper.” Ryan paused before asking the obvious: “Why is the beer in the crisper?” “Because grain’s a vegetable,” said Elsa, sensibly enough, as she dumped tortilla chips into a yellow plastic bowl.  “That means beer is good for you.” “I don’t even know what to say to that,” said Ryan, before digging a beer out from under a wilted head of lettuce.

  1. Loved Feed, it is one of my favorite books- Mira Grant is a great writer. Doesn’t 1.99 for 3900 words seem like a bad deal? I would think that it should be priced at .99 or less. Looking forward to the next book. Can’t wait until June 1 when Deadline comes out. I’m sure it will be awesome.

  2. Damn you! I have been holding off on buying an eReader, but I don’t think I can wait for a hard copy to read this.
    Pleasantly Angry,

  3. Glad to hear you’re a fan Al. We think it’s a good deal – after all, that’s less than a fancy cup of coffee these days! We hope you’ll consider it.

Rico, if you’re new to ereading you might want to try out one of the desktop readers. A number of the major ebook retailers let you download a reader that will run on your computer – it’s a good way to try before you buy a device.

  4. Agree with Al… .99 should be a better bet. I’ve bought The Box and i think it is good, but as a short single story is expensive. Consider these stories as a vehicle to sell the books… Now i’m going to buy Feed !

  5. I can see people in the comments quoting 1.99 ($? £?) but can not see anywhere on the web page to click to buy. I can see an excerpt and many ways to ‘share’ but am unable to read the full story an/or buy it.

  6. Hi Natalie -
These stories aren’t yet available at UK ebook stores – we’re working on it!

  7. I agree. 1.99 seems way to high for 3900 words, that’s about 7-8 pages!

  8. I am in the US and can’t find a click to buy button. I choose iBooks and was shown various ebook readers, not the story. Do I need more coffee?
