Perfect Shadow

by Brent Weeks

Publication Date—Jun 01, 2011

Discover the origins of Durzo Blint in this original novella set in the world of Brent Weeks’ New York Times bestselling Night Angel trilogy.

“I got a bit of prophecy,” the old assassin said. “Not enough to be useful, you know. Just glimpses. My wife dead, things like that to keep me up late at night. I had this vision that I was going to be killed by forty men, all at once. But now that you’re here, I see they’re all you. Durzo Blint.”

Durzo Blint? Gaelan had never even heard the name.

Gaelan Starfire is a farmer, happy to be a husband and a father; a careful, quiet, simple man. He’s also an immortal, peerless in the arts of war. Over the centuries, he’s worn many faces to hide his gift, but he is a man ill-fit for obscurity, and all too often he’s become a hero, his very names passing into legend: Acaelus Thorne, Yric the Black, Hrothan Steelbender, Tal Drakkan, Rebus Nimble.

But when Gaelan must take a job hunting down the world’s finest assassins for the beautiful courtesan-and-crimelord Gwinvere Kirena, what he finds may destroy everything he’s ever believed in.

Chateau Shayon is supposed to be unassailable. I love it when they say that. Crushing a bare rock just offshore with their weight, the chateau’s sheer walls ring the entire island, actually overhanging the waters of Lac Shayon in places. This was to be my first kill for hire. It’s good to start with the impossible. Make a name for myself. Enter with a splash. I emerged from the water with little more than a ripple. The walls loomed before me, above me. There were no shallows to stand in. In those few places where there once had been, some lord or another had sent masons to chip away rock to a depth of three paces below water. I was naked to the waist, skin smeared with fat and ashes for insulation and invisibility. Clothes would have simply filled with water, slowed me down. As it was, I was bleeding from a slash along one cheek and several cuts along my forearms. Defensive wounds. I didn’t want to stay in the water any longer than I had to. There were more of those damned things out there.

  3. Gah I am so excited for this. I love the night angel trilogy. I only wish it was longer and not an ebook only.

  4. I have read and reread the night angle trilogy and recently put in an order for one of the limited edition leather bound copies of this novella. I am so excited to read it and then reread the trilogy again with a new understanding of Durzo. I’m waiting by the door for my package to come in Brent. Do I really have to wait another couple of months? it’s killing me!

  5. Wow! Can’t wait… Night Angel was a beautiful set of books.

  6. I’m so excited! This is going to be a long summer waiting for this book. πŸ™‚

    Thanks for your wonderful writing!

  7. Great series! I am a author and a huge RA Salvatore fan so when I say Brent’s pace rivals any of the authors I have recently read—I mean it. Awesome storytelling, intriguing characters and great plot. If you haven’t checked this series out do yourself a favor and do it! And if you interested check out my book, “The Chronicles of Morgan Sparrowhawk: Rise of the Dragon Horde” Good job, Brent

  8. Brent Weeks what a tease … with sursease …. you give an easter Egg with no Bunny .. ha so funny. What is mightier than a sword ……. why words that unwrit .. you wit πŸ™‚

  11. i have read all the night angel series and i have also read the first of the lightbringer and might i say you have done an amazing job i cant wait for the second of the lightbringer and this book as well πŸ™‚

  12. Durzo wymiata!!!! Japierdziele to trzeba przeczytać!

  13. wait so if it is published as a digital novella does that mean it will not be sold in hard or soft cover book form like in a borders or barne’s and nobles?

  14. I will get this when it comes out as a real book as I have no real way to read an ebook πŸ™

Please don’t make me sit here and not be able to read more of one of my favorite series.

Other than that minor complaint of not being able to read ebooks… SWEET! I am pumped for this book!

    • ebooks can be read on PC/laptops as well as ebook readers… google something like ‘pc ebook reader’ im sure you will find something. i have Amazon Kindle on my laptop for example.

  15. You are truely a master of your art. Enough said.

  16. Thought the Night Angel trilogy was the best in the genre since Feisty. Just can’t wait for a follow on series.

  17. I really can’t wait for this. I have one of the few hard copies pre-ordered. Brent Weeks is definitely one of my favorite authors in the genre. But C.S. Friedman will still be first, he’s a close second. I’ve got to say, to save myself the torture of waiting I couldn’t read the excerpt. xD

  18. Woo! This is a winning series! Keep filling out the lore! Love it!

  19. do I NEED an ebook to read this? I LOVE Brent Weeks and don’t want to miss out just because I dont have an ebook πŸ™

  20. I hate the fact that I have to order overseas to get his books. Darn you, non-reading culture country!!!

  21. I have read perfect shadow. Love the details.
I only wish you made another book of Kylar, his child, Vi, Momma K, Durzo, Logan etc. And how life goes on for them.

Maybe another entire series of Kylar becoming a hero like Acaleus is. Maybe even Vi getting a ka’kari and with him forever. I don’t know. I just really want your “WAy of Shadows” books to continue. I was really sad when it finished like that. So many cliffhangers.

    • He said somewhere that he would be going back to tell the story of Kylar’s child after he finishes with the lightbringer trilogy. I can’t remember where I saw it but go scan his website, it’s probably there somewhere. I am a writer and have been reading all my life so labeling a “favorite author” has seemed impossible until I was consumed with the night angel trilogy and now the first of the lightbringer books. Brent is a true inspiration and I will definitely read perfect shadow.

  22. I agree with Mary. i to would like to see how all there lives played out. i also look forward 2 reading about Durzo.

  23. I would love to read this book, but I don’t like e-books. Please publish this book on paper.

  24. I have just read ‘Perfect Shadow’ and was left totally disappointed! The story itself was great, however I can’t help feeling that it was competely rushed with all the information on Durzo crammed into the smallest book ever. This could have been fab and totally promised to be such however it would have been better if the author could have expanded on things and gave a totally awsome book(s) – like the ‘Night Angel’ triology – instead of this information overload all crammed into one small book!
